Synopsis

The critical edition of Le Réveil de Flore – a ballet choreographed by Marius Petipa with music by Riccardo Drigo, first performed in 1894 – can be considered the first rigorously scientific reconstruction of a historical choreographic text, and – as such – a pioneering contribution to the field of dance studies. It is edited by Marco Argentina and published in two volumes: History and philology and Text and apparatus.

Volume I opens with a historical and methodological introduction, thus following the conventions of critical editions in musicology and literary studies; such introduction outlines the cultural milieu and choreographic practices of late nineteenth-century Russia, provides a detailed analysis of Le Réveil de Flore, reconstructs international circulation of the work up to the present day, and, finally, articulates and critically examines the methodological and ecdotic problems in ballet field.

Volume II contains the critical edition of Le Réveil de Flore, preceded by a Philological Introduction, and followed by the Critical-Philological Apparatus.
